Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The Archbishop of the Catholic Diocese of Juba, Cardinal Stephen Ameyu Martin Mulla, has called on South Sudanese to pray for peace in 2026 and break the cycle of violence that gripped the country in 2025.
Cardinal Ameyu made the appeal during a Christmas mass at St. Theresa Cathedral in Juba on Wednesday. He urged believers from different religions to seek reconciliation and reflect on the challenges faced by the country last year.
“I believe that Jesus Christ is in all of us here; Catholics, Presbyterians, Episcopalians, Christians, Muslims and Jews. If all of us kneel before God to ask Him for peace and equality, we will receive it. Peace does not come from abolishing laws or from our own efforts or ambitions.
“What we truly need is peace and reconciliation in our families and in our society. Let us pray to God that the coming year will be a time when we seek peace, reconciliation and forgiveness,” he appealed.
He also reminded citizens and leaders that unity and a better life require careful reflection and commitment.
“We still believe that our prayers together can bring this country into unity and cohesion, but we must be careful and committed. All of us want a better life, but as long as there is tension among us, that better life will not come,” he said.
On leadership and nation-building, Cardinal Ameyu emphasized sacrifice as central to meaningful peace.
“God does not bring chaos. He brings order. Let us develop love for our nation. Love for the nation is what we lack. We often look only for opportunities for money and employment, which end up dividing us. We must learn to sacrifice for our country. Nothing good comes without sacrifice. It is through sacrifice that a nation is built,” he said.
The Christmas mass was attended by President Salva Kiir, senior government officials, members of the diplomatic community, and worshippers from across Juba.
