Members of parliament representing three southern counties in Jonglei State say security is gradually returning to normal following renewed clashes in the northern parts of the state.
The lawmakers from Bor, Twic East, and Duk counties gave the assurance after meeting senior presidential advisor Kuol Manyang Juuk this afternoon.
In a statement issued by the Office of the Presidential Advisor, the Counties Parliamentary Caucus said the security situation in the three counties remains calm and stable, despite recent clashes between government forces and the SPLA-IO elsewhere in the state.
According to the statement, the lawmakers briefed Kuol Manyang on the prevailing security situation in the area.
The meeting comes amid heightened tensions in Jonglei State following recent fighting between the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army–In Opposition (SPLA-IO).
In recent weeks, the SPLA-IO reportedly overran some areas in Duk, Ayod, and Uror counties.
However, the MPs said Bor, Twic East, and Duk counties remain calm and under the full control of the SSPDF.
They added that security forces have taken measures to contain the situation and prevent the fighting from spreading to the three counties.
The lawmakers urged residents to remain calm and avoid panic. They also cautioned against misinformation and propaganda circulating on social media regarding the security situation.
They called on the public to rely on official information from authorities and to cooperate with security forces as efforts continue to maintain peace and stability in the region.
