Africa-Press – South-Sudan. Two people were killed and 12 others injured when a passenger vehicle overturned in Lakes State, police said.
The crash occurred Thursday between Yirol town and Aluakluak payam in Yirol West County. The vehicle was traveling from Juba to Wau carrying more than 100 passengers and their belongings.
Chol Gorjok, the state’s traffic police director, told Radio Tamazuj that the driver and one passenger, identified as Gatwech, died at the scene. Another victim, Arol Yuol Mou, was also confirmed dead.
“The injured passengers were taken to Yirol hospital and are receiving treatment,” Gorjok said, adding that investigators were at the scene and monitoring the condition of those hurt. The identities of the injured were not immediately available.
Authorities said the vehicle, described as a type commonly imported from Sudan, overturned along the route. The cause of the crash was not immediately clear.
Daniel Laat Kon, Lakes State coordinator for the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), said initial reports indicated the vehicle may have collided with another vehicle before overturning.
He called for greater road safety, urging drivers to avoid speeding and authorities to improve road conditions.
“The roads are in poor condition, and more lives could be lost if nothing is done,” he said.
