Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) have agreed to increase technical and program support for South Sudan.
Lily Albino Akol, Deputy and Acting Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, stated that cooperation will focus on irrigation development, fisheries, aquaculture, and digital agriculture. The agreement also covers climate-resilient farming and systems for plant and animal health.
Lily held talks with FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu following the FAO Regional Conference for Africa. The Director-General reaffirmed support through the Hand-in-Hand Initiative and the One Country One Priority Product program.
These initiatives are designed to increase productivity and attract investment into the national agri-food system. The FAO also committed to the Digital Villages program to help build food system resilience.
The government is preparing to host a national agriculture conference from May 4 to May 8, 2026. The event, themed “Investing in agri-food systems for a better life in South Sudan,” aims to coordinate efforts between ministries, state authorities, investors, and farmers.
“This is about making agriculture a collective responsibility,” Lily stated. She noted that food systems require coordination across the livestock, water, environment, and finance sectors.
A primary goal of the upcoming conference is to address land access for agricultural investment. Lily reported that states have received directives to allocate and legally protect land for farming use to remove barriers for investors.
The initiative is intended to shift agriculture from a government-led activity to a shared priority involving the private sector and local communities. Officials state the conference will serve as a platform to mobilize the partnerships necessary for large-scale transformation.
