Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>Sudan has announced that it will not be part of a planned summit to take place in Uganda to discuss the political situation in Sudan. Sudan was invited by the Executive Secretary of the regional Intergovernmental Authority on Development, IGAD, Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu to the summit scheduled for March.<\/p>\n

Ambassador Khalid Farah, the Sudanese Foreign Ministry spokesman, told Radio Tamazuj on Monday that they decline the invitation due to a lack of proper institutional processes.<\/p>\n

“As the chair of IGAD, Sudan is the one to call for such a summit. Proper institutional procedures have not been followed. Soon, we will call for a summit after consultation with member states and set the agenda,” he said.<\/p>\n

Currently, Sudan is the chair of IGAD, although Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok who was elected chairperson of IGAD, resigned from his position following political instability in Sudan. The IGAD Secretariat is currently headed by ex Ethiopian Foreign Affairs Minister Workneh Ghebeyehu.<\/p>\n

IGAD members comprise countries from the Horn of Africa (Ethiopia, Djibouti, Somalia, and Eritrea), the Nile Valley (Sudan and South Sudan), and the African Great Lakes region (Kenya and Uganda).<\/p>\n
