{"id":12783,"date":"2022-03-17T08:30:56","date_gmt":"2022-03-17T08:30:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/south-sudan\/all-news\/advocacy-group-welcomes-extension-of-unmiss-mandate"},"modified":"2022-03-17T09:54:52","modified_gmt":"2022-03-17T09:54:52","slug":"advocacy-group-welcomes-extension-of-unmiss-mandate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/south-sudan\/all-news\/advocacy-group-welcomes-extension-of-unmiss-mandate","title":{"rendered":"Advocacy\u00a0group welcomes extension of UNMISS mandate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>The Center for Peace and Advocacy (CPA), a human rights organization based in the capital, Juba, welcomes the extension of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) by the United Nations Security Council for another one year until March 15, 2023.<\/p>\n<p>According to CPA Executive Director, Ter Manyang Gatwech, the extension will help the UN Peacekeepers to create safe environment for humanitarian assistance delivery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will help UN peacekeepers are also responsible for creating conditions to deliver humanitarian aid, as well as supporting the implementation of the aforementioned peace agreement and peace process.\u201d CPA Executive Director Ter Manyang Gatwech said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe mandate extends to monitoring, investigating, and reporting on human rights abuses and violations of international humanitarian law and Human Rights Laws in the country.\u201d He added. The CPA Executive Director stressed that South Sudan is in a total mess as leaders have failed to control security and economy of the young nation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe country is now in a total breakdown of the rule of law due to the inability of the leaders to control the intra- and inter-communal fights among South Sudanese communities all over the country.\u201d CPA Director said.<\/p>\n<p>CPA reiterates that UNMISS has been playing critical roles in all these sectors including in maintaining security where the government fails and therefore, it\u2019s important that UNMISS\u2019 mandate is extended.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe recent fight in Magwi County between Bor Youth cattle keepers is the failure of the central government. Under its extended mandate, the UN mission\u2019s first priority remains the protection of civilians under threat of physical violence.
