Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>The undersecretary of the ministry of justice and constitutional affairs, Dr Gabriel Awow, has said the technical committee tasked with conducting the process of public consultation on truth, reconciliation, and healing will start working immediately after the launch presided over by President Salva Kiir.<\/p>\n

According to Dr Awow, the launch, which happened in Juba on Tuesday, is an important step in assembling the views of the people of South Sudan in preparation for the establishment of the truth and reconciliation commission.<\/p>\n

In February 2021, the council of ministers issued a directive for the ministry of justice and constitutional affairs to begin implementing Chapter 5 of the agreement, which deals with justice, accountability, reconciliation, and healing. It also covered Chapter 6 of the permanent constitution process and Chapter 1 of judicial reforms.<\/p>\n

Dr. Awow stated that the ministry of justice had made the necessary arrangements to support the committee\u2019s work and that the committee had drafted a budget of $970,000, of which the ministry of justice had managed to mobilise a quarter of the amount with the help of the United Nations Development Program.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe technical committee has made the necessary arrangements to go on the ground for the public consultation within a period of two weeks to the states and administrative areas and also abroad to Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, and DRC.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cUNDP is taking care of the necessary arrangements for their travel, accommodation, and local transport.\u201d<\/p>\n

The technical committee was constituted by the ministry of justice after consultations with the parties to the agreement, stakeholders, and civil society, according to the undersecretary and was launched by the First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar, in June 2021 to begin arrangements for conducting the public consultation.<\/p>\n

The technical committee is required to sensitise the people about the process of truth, reconciliation, and healing in order to create a conducive environment for the public to actively participate in the consultation in a meaningful manner.<\/p>\n

They are also tasked with documenting the views expressed during the consultation and submitting a report to the Ministry of Justice.<\/p>\n

The views and recommendations outlined in the technical committee\u2019s report will, however, be incorporated into the legislation establishing the CTRH. The ministry of justice will prepare the law and present it to the transitional national legislative assembly.<\/p>\n
