Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>The Norwegian government has highlighted its commitment to aiding the signatory parties to implement the peace agreement.<\/p>\n

Speaking at a reception for NGOs and co-partners in Juba, the Minister of International Development, Anne Beathe Tvinnereim, said Norway remains highly committed to assisting the parties in implementing the peace agreement.She said Norway has continued to support the quest of its citizens for development, peace and stability since independence.<\/p>\n

The minister further said that progress in the peace process has been exceedingly slow and added that the path to peace is still precarious.<\/p>\n

According to the official, South Sudan is one of the largest recipients of Norwegian development aid.<\/p>\n

Beathe stated that during her visit to the country, she held talks with her South Sudanese counterparts and urged them to make further progress by consolidating peace for the benefit of the people of South Sudan.<\/p>\n

She further applauded the Norwegian peacekeeping force serving in UNMISS for their service and urged them to adhere to their task of helping to stabilise the country, security-wise.<\/p>\n

\u201cFighting is still ongoing across the country. Fighting is the prime cause preventing development, and fighting makes it much more difficult to meet humanitarian needs. Your task is important; helping to move South Sudan from a state of civil strife to a path that allows the development of human and natural resources, \u201cshe stressed.<\/p>\n

Anne Beathe further urged civil society organisations in the country to work for an inclusive, generous society where all voices should be heard.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese last few years have been difficult. I hear about restrictions on freedom of speech and freedom of assembly, which are basic human rights. Your efforts to counter this trend are vital. I applaud your stamina in upholding the principles of freedom of speech in the face of increasing difficulties,\u201d the Minister said.<\/p>\n

The Minister added that there exists a special bond between the two nations and said the Norwegian government is committed to peace and development in South Sudan.<\/p>\n
