Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>South Sudan\u2019s National Legislature on Wednesday amended the Transitional Constitutional Bill, 2022 to transit the Sudan People\u2019s Liberation Army (SPLA) to the current South Sudan People\u2019s Defense Force (SSPDF).<\/p>\n

In May 2022, Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Ruben Madol Arol tabled Transitional Constitutional 2011 as amended, number 10 bills, 2022 to the parliament to change the name of the SPLA to SSPDF.<\/p>\n

John Agany, Chairperson of the Information Committee at the National Legislative Assembly said the constitutional amendment bill which the parliament has passed changed the name of the national army from SPLA to SSPDF.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe amendment is too small; it is just a matter of changing the name from other amendments to South Sudan People\u2019s Defense Forces and it was not actually a very big amendment,\u201d Agany told Journalists on Wednesday after parliamentary sitting in Juba.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe whole house has agreed to pass it into totality with all that recognition of unifying the forces under it and nationally it will take sharp.\u201d<\/p>\n

Agany said South Sudan has now joined the ranks of neighboring countries in the region by elevating its national army to be a professional force.<\/p>\n

\u201cSouth Sudan People\u2019s Defense Forces, this is the name now we have adopted and it bears a lot of meaning because this is the amendment which owns the army to the people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He said the amendment has transited the army into a professional defense force that reflects the diversity of the people of South Sudan.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe act of the army which was supposed to be amended will now proceed because it will be uniform with the constitution because the constituted has now been amended,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He said the Sudan People\u2019s Liberation Army (SPLA) Act, 2003 will also be amended to rhyme with the constitution.<\/p>\n

The amendment in question is about the name of the army which has already been concluded in the constitution and you know it must rhyme together with the SPLA act. The act will be amended according to that name,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
