Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>A civil society activist is urging top leadership of South Sudan to promptly implement the Revitalised Peace Agreement to win the support of the international community.<\/p>\n

This followed a recent revelation by the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) that the US government has withdrawn support for South Sudan peace implementation.<\/p>\n

Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), blamed the leaders for the withdrawal of the US support.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2018However much the US is disappointed with the lack of political will and commitment from our leaders, they should not let this peace agreement collapse,\u2019\u2019 Yakani told The City Review.<\/p>\n

He said the leaders of the peace agreement lack the political will and commitment to implement the agreement in letter and spirit.<\/p>\n

However, he appealed to the US government to revise its decision and support the peace agreement\u2019s implementation to allow the country to transition to democracy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe US reacted in the manner that our leaders failed to exercise their primary responsibility to implement the agreement,\u201d Yakani said.<\/p>\n

The heads of states expressed surprise over the US\u2019s decision to scale down its support for the Ceasefire Transitional Security Arrangement Monitoring and Verification Mechanism (CTSAM-VM), arguing this could affect the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring Evaluation Commission (R-JMEC) and organizations that have been delivering the much-needed humanitarian assistance.<\/p>\n

To complete the remaining tasks of the agreement, including the election, the leaders have urged parties to develop a roadmap with clear benchmarks and deadlines. They made an appeal to the US to change their mind about drastically reducing their support for the peace process in South Sudan, which is impairing the operation of crucial agreement mechanisms.<\/p>\n

It is only eight months remaining for the transitional period to end, but several crucial tasks are still pending.<\/p>\n
