Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>President Salva Kiir reconstituted the committee on the Abyei and tasked it with defining the final status of the disputed area.<\/p>\n

In the presidential order read on the state-owned television South Sudan Broadcasting Cooperation on Tuesday, Kiir reappointed Tut Gatluak, Presidential Advisor on Security Affairs as the head of the committee.<\/p>\n

In the same decree, Kiir also reappointed the Minister of East African Community Affairs, Deng Alor Kuol, as the deputy chairperson of the committee.<\/p>\n

Also, Deng Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mayiik Ayii, was appointed as rapporteur of the committee deputised by Madison Otormoi.<\/p>\n

The other members include Asha Abbas Akuei, Nyanaguek Kuol Mareng, Augustino Jadalla Wani, Tor Deng Mawein, Akol Khoor Koc, Deng Arop Kuol, Deng Biong Mijak and Deng Deng Akuei.<\/p>\n

The terms of reference for the committee include pursuing the final status of the Abyei Area through engagement with the Government of the Republic of Sudan.<\/p>\n

According to the decree, the community is also expected to present the position of the government of South Sudan and Sudan and other partners both regional and international bodies.<\/p>\n

The committee was also tasked with advising the government of South Sudan on necessary steps towards realisation of the final status of Abyei Area.<\/p>\n

It was tasked to report to the president periodically on the progress of the negotiations undertaken.<\/p>\n

On the same decree, the President also formed a subcommittee on development and natural resources comprising Ambassador Arop Deng Kuol, as Chairperson deputized by Mayen Wol Jong, Undersecretary of the Ministery of Petroleum, Jok Mading as Rapporteur other members.<\/p>\n

The terms of reference for the subcommittee is to create a cooperation framework for the development of oil and other natural resources in the Abyei Area<\/p>\n

The subcommittee would also ensure that the cooperation framework achieves high social-economical, ecological and technological standards<\/p>\n

It would also engage with the communities to ensure their participation and outreach to the international partners and the development of oil and other natural resources in the Abyei Area.<\/p>\n

The subcommittee shall periodically report to the executive office of the committee on the progress and challenges of its tasks.<\/p>\n

The subcommittee may co-opt any other relevant persons where it is deemed appropriate.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, in 2021 President Salva Kiir formed a committee to dialogue with Sudan over the disputed Abyei Area.<\/p>\n

In the presidential decree, Kiir named his security advisor, Tut Gatluak to head the committee deputised by Deng Alor Kuol.<\/p>\n
