Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>Flash floods displaced more than 50,000 people in Nasir County of Upper Nile state, and the authority is now appealing to humanitarian agencies for emergency intervention.<\/p>\n

Commissioner Nasir County, Duol Kun Thian told Eye Radio, the flooding which covers the entire county has displaced thousands of his citizens.<\/p>\n

He attributes the situation to the persistent torrential rainfall causing the Nile River to burst its bank and flow into villages.<\/p>\n

Kun says some of those displaced in Nasir town are sheltering with him at the main hospital, while others have moved to higher grounds and government facilities.<\/p>\n

He said the flood-affected victims lack food, shelter, and medicines.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe area is submerged by flood water, and over 50,000 people have been displaced. Nasir town has been submerged by water, we [county government] now evacuated to Nasir hospital, which is a bit higher,\u201d said the commissioner of Nasir.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe water is coming from the river and also the rains, we need help and assistance from the national government and humanitarian agencies, and we could be evacuated.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last month, the government declared a national emergency in flood affected areas and contracted logistic companies to supply relief items to the displaced and stranded populations.<\/p>\n

It is not yet known whether the food supplies have reached the affected communities.<\/p>\n
