Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>The Vice President for Service Cluster, Hussein Abdelbagi, has opened up about his trip to New York for the United Nations General Assembly, lauding the engagements he had with leaders around the world.<\/p>\n

Abdelbagi said world leaders promised support for the peace agreement and other ceasefire initiatives.<\/p>\n

\u201c I met with the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on South Sudan\u2019s relations with international organisations, issues of borders in South Sudan, especially the situation of Abyei, as well as the support of the international community for the extended transitional period,\u2019\u2019 he stated.<\/p>\n

Abdelbagi was briefing President Salva Kiir upon his return from the UN trip on Friday.<\/p>\n

Last month, the vice president called on the United Nations to recognise the 2013 Abyei Community Referendum to determine Abyei\u2019s final status.<\/p>\n

Abdelbagi made the remarks in a sideline meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York during the 77th UN General Assembly.<\/p>\n

The residents in the disputed region of Abyei conducted a community-based referendum and voted overwhelmingly (99.9 per cent) to join South Sudan.<\/p>\n

However, the African Union dismissed the result and termed it a threat to peace between Sudan and South Sudan.<\/p>\n

He added that the government remains committed to ensuring that peace prevails in Abyei and the region.<\/p>\n

At the same meeting, VP Abdelbagi said the government of South Sudan plans to increase the annual education budget by 20 per cent.<\/p>\n

Also, Abdelbagi expressed the South Sudan leaders\u2019 commitment to implementing the peace agreement, adding that the lack of funds remains a challenge.<\/p>\n

He appealed to the international community to support peace implementation in South Sudan to facilitate a peaceful transition of power for two years.<\/p>\n
