Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>Vice President of Service Cluster Hussein Abdelbagi assessed the progress of the construction of Akon International Airport in Gogrial West, Warrap State, yesterday.<\/p>\n

Abdelbagi noted in a statement posted on his official Facebook page yesterday that the $15 million project, once completed, will spur economic growth for neighbouring states.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have arrived in Akon, Warrap State, and have been received by Governor Hon. Eng. Manhiem Bol Malek. I then proceeded to the Akon International Airport construction site, following reports of the cleared area being underwater that I didn\u2019t personally see,\u201d the VP said.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor that matter, this project must yield fruits for the benefit of the residing communities, neighbouring states, and the country at large in terms of economic growth,\u201d he added. According to Abdelbagi, the project represents the government\u2019s long-term mantra of \u2018taking towns to the people\u2019 through the development of social amenities.<\/p>\n

He commended the contractors and the local people for working to improve the state of the facilities, which he said would ensure that the country gets the second international airport after Juba International Airport (JIA).<\/p>\n

In May last year, Abdelbagi laid the foundation for the construction of what would be the second international airport in South Sudan, but the site had been submerged under water following torrential floods in 2022.<\/p>\n

Following its initiation last year, the former governor of Warrap State, Aleu Ayieny Aleu, called on the national government to continue supporting the airport situated in Akon, which is also the home of President Salva Kiir.<\/p>\n

Aleu who was fired in November last year, said the Akon International Airport would serve the country and the region in the sectors of trade and agriculture.<\/p>\n

\u201cI appeal to the central government to continue providing support to complete the construction of Akon International Airport and that the support does not stop,\u201d The City Review quoted former Governor Aleu last year.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe engineers said the airport construction will take two years,\u201d he said, adding that \u201cthe construction of Akon International Airport will cost $ 15 million, and we will build the airport runway according to the design requested.\u201d<\/p>\n
