Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>Nationalministry of Gender, child and social welfare yesterday held experts\u2019 consultativeforum at local hotel in Juba on affirmative action bill for 35% representationof women in governance. Theforum was attended by a number of experts from different ministries as well asrepresentatives from other Countries.<\/p>\n

Whileaddressing the forum, the undersecretary in the ministry of Gender, child andsocial welfare, Esther Ikere, said that the major aim of the forum was toensure that the affirmative action bill on the 35% representation of women indecision making process was accomplished.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2019Oneof the things we are anticipating after the completion and operationalizationof the affirmative action bill for the 35% of representation is that allocationof positions for women at all levels by political parties in a transparencymanner as provided by the revitalised agreement,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n

Ikerealso added that the bill would also include effective monitoring of theimplementation of the 35% provision of opportunities as designated in therevitalised agreement as well as enhance compliance and accountability ofparties to their commitment in promoting gender equality.<\/p>\n

However,Vicky Karimi, a consultant on the project pointed out during her presentationthat, Article 16 of the constitution guarantees the 35% women representation ingovernance.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2019Article16 subsection 4 of the constitution critically provides and guarantees for highparticipation of women. It also provides inclusivity of gender representationparticularly in regard to the executive,\u2019\u2019 She added.<\/p>\n

Shefurther reiterated that South Sudan is party to many international and regionalobligations, basically on the status of women\u2019s\u2019 peace and security.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2019SouthSudan is subject to global and regional obligations more especially in genderrepresentation in political positions,particularly in the executive. Theconstitution gives a mandate to female representation in leadership in allsectors of governance which includes the executive,\u2019\u2019 she stated.<\/p>\n
