{"id":3164,"date":"2021-10-26T14:11:03","date_gmt":"2021-10-26T14:11:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/south-sudan\/all-news\/ties-at-stake-amid-coup-in-sudan"},"modified":"2021-10-26T14:33:44","modified_gmt":"2021-10-26T14:33:44","slug":"ties-at-stake-amid-coup-in-sudan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/south-sudan\/all-news\/ties-at-stake-amid-coup-in-sudan","title":{"rendered":"TIES -At stake amid coup in Sudan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>South Sudan and Sudan\u2019s bilateralties is now at the stake since efforts of border reopening now uncertain, oilrefinery closed and Sudan peace talks hosted by President Kiir Mayardit remainedat a standstill.<\/p>\n<p>The head of Sudan\u2019s rulingcouncil Abdel Fattah al-Burhan yesterday announced the dissolution of the TransitionalSovereign Council and the government, enacting a state of emergency amid amilitary coup after prime minister\u2019s arrest.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement delivered onMonday, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the head of Sovereign Council of military andcivilian members which runs the country, declared a state of emergency anddissolved the government.<\/p>\n<p>Following the arrest of PrimeMinister Abdalla Hamdok and other officials by troops, Burhan stated that themilitary would oversee the remainder of Sudan\u2019s transition to democracy andwill hand over to a democratically elected government.<\/p>\n<p>The arrest of Hamdok who is the Chairpersonof IGAD will raise eyebrows in the regional security set up. This is given thefact that, Hamdok was mediating South Sudan peace and Ethiopian conflict among othervital matters in the region.<\/p>\n<p>In statement availed to JubaMonitor, The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamatsaid he had learned with dismay, among other, the arrest of Prime ministerAbdallah Hamdok and other civilian officials.<\/p>\n<p>However he called for immediate resumptionof consultations between civilians and military within the framework of thepolitical declaration and constitutional degree. The Chairperson reaffirms thatthe dialogue and consensus is the only relevant path to save the country andits democratic transition.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile the ExecutiveDirector for Community Empowerment for Progressorganization (CEPO) Edmond Yakani said the political development in Sudan wasdisturbing and South Sudan should call for the urgent meeting of the heads ofstates and IGAD on the development in Sudan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe current politicaldevelopment in Sudan is disturbing us in South Sudan since Sudan is the currentchair of IGAD and one of the guarantors of (R-ARCSS) CEPO is urging IGAD current headof states to rescue the arrested active chair of the body by the military inSudan\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Emond Yakani is calling for urgentmeeting of headof states and governments of IGAD on the development in Sudan.Any undemocratic act currently in Sudan has serious implications in the region. Finally, CEPO is urging jointintervention of IGAD and African Union to restore peaceful political transitionin Sudan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, sources in Sudan toldJuba Monitor Newspaper on phone yesterday that, thesituation in Khartoum was stilltense and movement remainedrestricted because of the protest on the streetswhich resulted to state of emergency.<\/p>\n<p>Thesource, shared the plights ofSouth Sudanese amid the protest in Sudan, saying that, people had been livingindoors since morning without going for foods and water.<\/p>\n<p>The source described howprotestorsbarricaded the streets of Khartoum to block movement of people. \u201cYes, people have been indoorssince morning and as I talk to you now, the protestors have put the tyres to barricades the roads.\u201d the source said<\/p>\n<p>Concluded in the statement whichshowed no more details of what was happening outside the capital as movementwas restricted. The source could not also be confirm if there was any SouthSudanese among the 12 people who were injured during the protest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am not aware of what is goingoutside there since we are locked inside and movement is restricted by the military.I am not able to know how many South Sudanese could be among those injured\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Mediareports indicated that, 12 civilians were injured during the protest.
