Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>The Federal Government of Germany has extended the operation of its forces in South Sudan by 12 months.<\/p>\n

The German battalion is part of the United Nations Mission \u201cUNMISS\u201d forces based in Upper Nile and parts of Equatoria regions.<\/p>\n

Germany said that 50 personnel currently in South Sudan will continue with the mission until 2023.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe participation of soldiers of the Federal Armed Forces in the UN mission in South Sudan is to be extended until 31 March 2024,\u201d the German government said in a press statement seen by City Review.<\/p>\n

UNMISS\u2019s main mandate is to protect civilians and support the implementation of the 2018 peace agreement and the peace process. The joint forces operation in South Sudan has been approved by the UN Security Council.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe successful implementation of this mandate continues to be essential to the stabilisation and long-term peaceful development of South Sudan and its long-suffering civilian population,\u201d added the statement.<\/p>\n

The decision was approved by the Federal Cabinet though the Bundestag (German Federal Parliament) still has to agree to the resolution.<\/p>\n

The German forces will be deployed in the mission headquarters where they will act as advisory, liaison, and observation officers. In addition, German personnel can, if necessary, provide temporary support for the initial and advanced training of United Nations personnel.<\/p>\n

Although major progress is being made, South Sudan continues to rely on the extensive support of the international community with security remaining a major challenge.<\/p>\n

\u201cGermany\u2019s involvement in \u201cUNMISS\u201d is one of many long-term efforts towards sustainable conflict management and peacebuilding,\u201d said Germany.<\/p>\n
