Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>Media Authority Managing Director yesterday urgedUnion of Journalists in South Sudan (UJOSS) to put on more effort in promotingprofessional and ethical journalism in the media industry.<\/p>\n

Speaking during the official opening of Conference for the Commemoration of the International Day to End Impunity (IDEI) for Crimes Committed against journalists,Elijah Aliercalled on the media fraternity to continue observing the code of conduct to lessen cases of intimidation and arbitrary detention of journalists.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Country has noticed reductions to cases ofintimidations and arbitrary detentions as a result of responsible reporting andobservations of code of conduct\u201d, Alier said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe urge UJOSS to promote professionaljournalists in the Country, meaning professional and ethical journalism inSouth Sudan\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Majak Kuany, the UJOSS Secretary Generalechoed, that there was a need for Media Authority to expedite establishinga\u201d media compliance\u201d as required by the constitution for protecting journalists.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur Country is transitioning from armconflicts to post conflicts. With this challenge of working media in theCountry, we need Media Authority to fully establish Media Compliance asrequired by the constitution\u201d, he said. Kuany also called on government to maintain the ruleof law by bringing perpetrators to justice and end Impunity against journalistsin the Country.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are holding our government accountable forrule of law by bringing perpetrators to justice and end Impunity against journalistsin the Country. All journalists and media houses to remain professional inupholding the highest standards of professionalism\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n

The member of the Organizing Committee for theevent, Mr. Michael Duku disclosed that, 12 Media houses were selected to organizeIDEI conference in a bid to commemorate the day under the theme:\u201cCountering threats of violence and crimes against journalists to protectfreedom of expression for all\u201d.<\/p>\n

UJOSS is an institutionwitha mandate to fight forwelfare of both journalists and media houses and protect journalists againstcrimes and helps in the areas of capacity building as well.<\/p>\n
