Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>The Government of Japan has announced an emergency grant of $3.5 million for refugees and returnees arriving from Sudan.<\/p>\n

The grant will help international organisations provide shelter, essential goods, food, and protection in response to the influx of a large number of refugees and returnees.<\/p>\n

These funds will target only refugees and returnees in Egypt, Chad, and South Sudan who are fleeing the conflict in Sudan.<\/p>\n

Japan is working in close coordination with the neighbouring countries to persuade an early ceasefire in Sudan and open routes for humanitarian assistance.<\/p>\n

Since the war broke out in Sudan, leading to the mass exodus of the South Sudanese and other nationals who were fleeing clashes, South Sudan has received over 30,000 people as returnees and refugees.<\/p>\n

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Albino Akol, said on Monday that the government was doing everything within its power to address the humanitarian situation, although the limited resources were getting stretched.<\/p>\n

Albino noted that his ministry had received $1 million out of the $5 million allocated by the cabinet. He said the money was already appropriated, but the situation was getting worse as more people continued to flock to the border.<\/p>\n

\u201cCabinet has approved 1 million, we have tried to facilitate the people, but unfortunately, there are people who are suffering and in need of humanitarian aid,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe funds that we have received from the government have [been] finished, and currently we are waiting for other funds from the government. Yes, we will get the second fund, but while we are waiting, the people will continue to suffer,\u201d Albino said.<\/p>\n
