Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>The South Sudan\u2019s deputy minister of finance and planning, Agok Makur, said they need to study the Doha Summit outcomes before implementing them.<\/p>\n

Speaking during a meeting on the Doha Summit and the launch of the preparation for the UN Sustainable Development Goal Summits on Thursday, Makur said the government was committed to the implementation of the Doha recommendations after prudent study.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe summit has provided for us the way on how to address the challenges that the country is facing, especially in terms of climate change, of which the country is a victim currently,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs the government, we can\u2019t do it alone, but we need the support of the partners for us to achieve the goal,\u201d Agok added.<\/p>\n

He said they were committed to the economic development and growth of the citizens, especially the youth, through the creation of job opportunities.<\/p>\n

The meeting aimed at ensuring the ownership and domestication of the Doha program\u2019s actions and commitment by the stakeholders in South Sudan.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the UN resident coordinator, Peter Van, challenged the government towards development in South Sudan.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only way for South Sudan to protect itself against the shock in the region is to accelerate development. The past ten years have revealed that close to 1 billion USD have been used to address the humanitarian aid challenges annually, and South Sudan remains a victim of the humanitarian challenge,\u201d Mr. Van said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a need for the commitment of the government to move South Sudan from the stage of humanitarian to development,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

He noted the problems facing South Sudan but said there are opportunities and initiatives in different sectors including education.<\/p>\n

Van encouraged the government to continue to seek developmental opportunities in the country, adding there are a number of governors who have taken initiatives toward the development with the help of the partners.<\/p>\n

The Doha Programme of Action for the Least Developed Countries for the Decade 2022-2031 was adopted on March in Doha Summit during the first part of the LDC5 conference on March 17, 2022 and endorsed by the General Assembly<\/p>\n

The second summit took place in Doha from March 5 to March 9, 2023. There, world leaders gathered with civil society, the private sector, young people and more to build the plans and partnerships deliver on the promise and ambition of the DPoA over the following decade<\/p>\n

The DPoA includes six key focus areas. They include investing in people in the least developed countries, eradicating poverty and building capacity to leave no one behind; leveraging the power of science, technology, and innovation to fight against multidimensional vulnerabilities and to achieve the SDGs.<\/p>\n

The other goals are supporting structural transformation as a driver of prosperity, enhancing international trade of least developed countries and regional integration, addressing climate change, environmental degradation, recovering from COVID-19 pandemic and building resilience against future shocks for risk-informed sustainable development.<\/p>\n
