Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>The United States government called on the Revitalised Transitional Government of National Unity to address challenges preventing the country from realising its potential.<\/p>\n

In a statement issued during the celebration of the 12th independence anniversary on July 9, 2023, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said fighting corruption would help build security within the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe urge the transitional government to implement measures necessary to conduct free, fair, and peaceful elections, to fight corruption in public office, business, and industry, to build unified security services that respect human rights, and to develop democratic institutions that ensure South Sudan is responsive to the needs of its people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

In a statement released by the US embassy in Juba, Mr. Blinken reaffirmed the US\u2019s commitment to standing with the people of South Sudan.<\/p>\n

Mr. Blinken said twelve years ago, upon the founding of South Sudan, then-President Barack Obama \u201crecognized the people of South Sudan for having endured extraordinary hardship and sacrifices to determine their own destiny.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe (Obama) highlighted South Sudan\u2019s newly won \u2018opportunity to realize a future where their lives are valued and their human rights are upheld,\u201d Blinken stated.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday the United States reaffirms its commitment to stand with the people of South Sudan in pursuit of a democratic future and a society marked by dignity, opportunity, prosperity, and peace,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Mr. Blinken congratulated the people of South Sudan on the celebration of their independence.<\/p>\n
