{"id":41123,"date":"2023-08-02T17:55:07","date_gmt":"2023-08-02T17:55:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/south-sudan\/all-news\/kenya-ends-monopoly-of-south-sudan-cargo-clearance"},"modified":"2023-08-02T17:55:07","modified_gmt":"2023-08-02T17:55:07","slug":"kenya-ends-monopoly-of-south-sudan-cargo-clearance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/south-sudan\/all-news\/kenya-ends-monopoly-of-south-sudan-cargo-clearance","title":{"rendered":"Kenya ends monopoly of South Sudan cargo clearance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>The Kenyan government has ordered an end to the monopolized clearance and handling of all cargo destined for South Sudan from the Mombasa port.<\/p>\n<p>Former Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho\u2019s family firm, Auto-port Freight Terminals Limited had for more than a year solely handled goods headed to South Sudan.<\/p>\n<p>However, on Wednesday, President Ruto\u2019s administration nominated three companies to handle the more than 1.1 million tons of cargo annually destined for South Sudan from Mombasa Port.<\/p>\n<p>It has picked Compact Consolbase, Mombasa Container Terminal, and Mitchell Cotts to handle cargo from and to the Port of Mombasa.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the nomination, Kenya\u2019s Transport Principal Secretary Mohamed Daghar last week said cargo destined for South Sudan could be handled by any Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) custom bonded warehouse.<\/p>\n<p>Reacting to the move, Dennis Maende Odero a Freight consultant at Mombasa Port who had also advocated for an end to the monopoly, describes the decision as positive.<\/p>\n<p>He says this will ensure nobody takes advantage and mistreat South Sudanese business community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s positive.
