Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>SPLM members in the Equatoria and Upper Nile regions have scheduled separate rallies to endorse President Salva Kiir as the flagbearer for 2024 elections.<\/p>\n

The SPLM Equatoria group on Thursday \u201cofficially\u201d launched the upcoming endorsement rally, but no date has been confirmed yet.<\/p>\n

The National Secretariat kickstarted the process at the SPLM House in Juba as the party gears up campaign for the first-ever elections since the country\u2019s independence.<\/p>\n

The launch under the theme \u201cWe Strongly Stand and Support Your Leadership\u201d brought together senior party cadres from all National, State, and County structures and others in SPLM House.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, SPLM members in the Upper Nile Region are also planning a similar initiative to endorse Kiir as the party flagbearer, in December 2023.<\/p>\n

According to a consultative meeting by a \u201chigh-level committee\u201d led by Unity State Governor, Dr. Joseph Manytuil, the initiative to endorse Kiir\u2019s candidacy will take place in the first week of December.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe consultative meeting of the SPLM Upper Nile Region agreed that the venue of political rally should be historical regional capital Malakal and on the first week of December,\u201d reads part of a press release seen by Eye Radio.<\/p>\n

The scheduled rallies follow a similar endorsement event in Wau by SPLM members in the Bahr el Ghazal region.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, none of the other political parties within the 2018 peace deal has announced a presidential contender.<\/p>\n

This has prompted civil society groups and the International Community to call for a free civic and political space in the country.<\/p>\n

On August 4, 2023, Information Minister Michael Makuei said parties to the 2018 peace agreement are free to conduct political rallies and campaigns ahead of the 2024 elections.<\/p>\n

\u201cNone of the parties had ever been stopped from performing any of its political activities in South Sudan. Probably people are saying so because they are seeing the SPLM all the time appearing there, they appear there because of their activity,\u201d he told Eye Radio.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you are dormant, you are not doing anything it is our duty to go and wake you up, hey get up, go and make a public rally. It is your duty to plan your own public rally, and your own activities and invite the media to attend it for you and they cover it, after covering it, it is played all over.\u201d<\/p>\n
