Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>The discussion on how to complete the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia-Transport Corridor project (LAPSSET) dominated the bilateral talks between President Salva Kiir and his Kenyan counterpart, William Ruto, over the weekend.<\/p>\n

Kiir flew out to Nairobi for hours to meet Ruto for what the Presidential Press Unit described in its statement as a visit aimed at \u201cbilateral talks\u201d between Juba and Nairobi.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Heads of State also discussed implementing the infrastructural projects under the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia-Transport Corridor project( LAPSSET),\u201d PPU noted.<\/p>\n

Part of the bilateral engagement was the Memorandum of Understanding penned by the two leaders to have a fibre optic capable established on Eldoret-Juba road, PPU confirmed.<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Kiir and I had the opportunity to share ideas about collaborating to seize emerging opportunities to improve the trade balance between our two nations,\u201d Kenya\u2019s president was quoted in a press release.<\/p>\n

Juba and Nairobi will also complete the 11-kilometre Nadapal-Nakodok road that is still under construction.<\/p>\n

The presidential meeting comes two months after South Sudan adopted LAPSSET resolutions to boost the country\u2019s infrastructure.<\/p>\n

The Minister of Transport Madut Biar communicated the decision during the conclusion of the LAPSSET ministerial meeting in Juba in May 2023. The meeting was attended by ministers and senior officials from Kenya, Ethiopia, and South Sudan.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo promote broad ownership of LAPSSET Corridor projects by stakeholders and the citizens of the footprint countries and encourage the relevant government authorities to incorporate the key aspects of the Corridor activities in their respective national development plans,\u201d the resolution stated.<\/p>\n

The resolutions were 11, and they called on member states of LAPSSET to participate in corridor projects in their national development plans and develop a 10-year strategic plan for their implementation.<\/p>\n
