Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>Radio Tamazuj has seen a press release by the Bank of South Sudan\u2019s (BOSS) Communication and Public Relations Department titled \u201cBank of South Sudan refutes allegations on currency change\u201d dated 11 September 2023.<\/p>\n

In the said statement, BOSS categorically rebuts that Governor Johnny Ohisa ever suggested the change of the currency to stop people from hoarding money in their homes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Bank of South Sudan (BOSS) would like to respond to the allegations that appeared in different media houses (Radio Tamazuj and the Arabic language daily, Al Watan) that its Governor, Hon. Johny Ohisa, proposed a change of the South Sudanese currency,\u201d the statement read in part.<\/p>\n

The Radio Tamazuj editorial team would however like to inform our readership and listeners that we stand by our story dated 8 September and titled \u201cCentral Bank governor calls for currency change.\u201d<\/p>\n

Governor Ohisa made the recommendation, among other statements, last Thursday while responding to queries from participants who questioned the lack of a savings culture in South Sudan during the National Economic Conference which concluded on Saturday.<\/p>\n

\u201cDuring the 2013 conflict, when all the savings and deposits in most commercial banks were used by the Central Bank to further the policy of the government,\u201d he said. \u201cIf you had an account in dollars and went to withdraw your money, they said Central Bank has taken this money……this is what made people move their money and keep it in their house. But the only solution to take this money out of the houses is to change the currency.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can just change the currency and everybody will just bring back and deposit to the bank system,\u201d Governor Ohisa added.<\/p>\n
