Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>The United Kingdom (UK) urged the South Sudanese leaders to demonstrate a political will by working towards a free, fair and credible poll in December 2024.<\/p>\n The UK Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Amb. James Kariuki told the UN Security Council meeting on South Sudan that the Juba administration had made some remarkable achievements worth noting on the eve of the fifth anniversary of the revitalised peace agreement but much needs to be executed in the final lap.<\/p>\n \u201cSo, we call on South Sudan\u2019s leaders to demonstrate the political will to deliver the free and fair elections that the South Sudanese people deserve,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n \u201cThe United Kingdom welcomes the recent establishment of an Election Security Committee and the presentation of the National Elections Act to Parliament,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n Amb. Kariuki said although there have been electoral talks gathering momentum, there is still a lot of pending tasks on the preparation phase. He said the political environment also requires tolerance that will go a long way in ensuring accommodation of divergent views synonymous with a democracy.<\/p>\n \u201cWe call on the South Sudanese authorities to create the necessary political and civic space to allow for free and credible elections,\u201d he stated in his speech.<\/p>\n He added, \u201cThe United Kingdom welcomes the progress achieved since then, and that disputes are now largely resolved through political dialogue, not conflict.<\/p>\n \u201cBut we remain concerned that progress is too slow and too limited.
