Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>Speaker Jemma Nunu has told the bi-annual Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly in Angola that the 2018 peace agreement is on track and the country is ready to hold elections in 2024.<\/p>\n

The five-day 147th assembly in Angola\u2019s capital Luanda is being held under the theme; \u2018Parliamentary action for peace, justice and strong institutions,\u2019 began on Monday and will conclude on Friday.<\/p>\n

It aims to ensure nations\u2019 public institutions become increasingly effective, accountable, and representative in the face of multifaceted challenges facing the world.<\/p>\n

Addressing the Speakers\u2019 gathering, Right Honorable Nunu Kumba said the August House has amended several legislations that promote transparency and accountability.<\/p>\n

She says South Sudan\u2019s transitional parliament has for the past two years amended most of the security laws to confirm with the security reform programs stipulated in the 2018 peace agreement.<\/p>\n

Nunu also said the August House enacted several legislations that promote transparency and accountability in public institutions to enhance people\u2019s confidence in the government.<\/p>\n

She added that the implementation of the peace agreement is on track \u2013 while citing the enactment of the Public Finance and Accountability Act, Anti-corruption Act, Constitution-making Process Act, the Elections Act, and the Political Parties Act.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the last two years, the parliament has amended most of the security laws to conform with the security reform program stipulated in the peace agreement,\u201d Nunu said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe parliament has enacted several pieces of legislation that promote transparency and accountability in public institutions to enhance people\u2019s confidence in the people\u2019s parliament and the executive,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe laws include the Public Finance and Accountability Act, Anti-corruption Act, Constitution Making Process Act, the Election Act, Political Parties Act and other related legislation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaker Nunu also told the Parliamentary Union Assembly that President Salva Kiir is committed to holding elections in 2024 to allow the citizens to choose their leaders who will deliver services to them.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish to inform this August audience that the implementation of the peace agreement is on track. The government and our president, Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit is committed to holding elections at the end of the transitional period in 2024,\u201d Nunu said.<\/p>\n

\u201cElections serve as the only mechanism that can allow the people of South Sudan to choose their leaders and representatives who will deliver services that reflect their needs and enhance trust and confidence building,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
