In a statement released today, Luk highlighted the country\u2019s history of violence between security forces and civilians during previous disarmament efforts.<\/p>\n

He emphasized the need for a comprehensive and well-coordinated approach to disarmament that upholds human rights principles.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe government must ensure that the disarmament process is carried out in a transparent and accountable manner,\u201d Luk stated. \u201cThere must be clear guidelines and procedures in place to prevent abuses of power and to protect the rights of civilians.\u201d<\/p>\n

Luk specifically cautioned against the selective targeting of certain regions, such as Upper Nile, for disarmament, as this could exacerbate tensions and jeopardize the revitalized peace process.<\/p>\n

He instead advocated for a nationwide approach that adheres to the provisions of the National Arms Act.<\/p>\n

Luk also called for increased engagement with local communities and armed groups to build trust and address their concerns.<\/p>\n
