Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>South Sudan\u2019s outgoing police chief Gen. Majak Akec has welcomed the decision by President Salva Kiir Mayardit to remove him from his position.<\/p>\n

Akec in a statement seen by Sudans Post expressed his gratitude to the President for the trust he had bestowed upon him and acknowledged the challenges he faced during his five-year tenure.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe journey was tough and challenging,\u201d Akec said. \u201cHowever, your full backing in the execution of my duties as Police Chief became possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Akec also commended the police leadership, state governors and chief administrators of administrative areas, and the South Sudanese citizens for their support during his time as Police Chief.<\/p>\n

Akec further urged the public to extend the same cooperation to the newly appointed Police Chief.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would like to thank my family for the moral support they gave me while serving the people of South Sudan,\u201d he said Akec added. \u201cAs the former Inspector General, it is imperative to say in a changing society, and as such, we must therefore, embrace change once effected.\u201d<\/p>\n

Akec was sacked by Kiir in a decree read out on the state-owned SSBC on Tuesday night. Though the president did not cite official reasons for his removal, it comes following days of rumored coup attempt.<\/p>\n

He was appointed to the position in February 2018, having previously served as the director-general of nationality, passport, and immigration.<\/p>\n

The president in another decree appointed Lt. Gen. Atem Marol Biar as the new Inspector-General of Police. The new police chief was previously the Director General of the Interior Ministry\u2019s Directorate of Civil Registry, Nationality Passports, and Immigration.<\/p>\n
