Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span> South Sudan National Revenue Authority has blocked bank accounts of 10 companies over failure to pay taxes amounting to 10 billion South Sudanese pounds, Ajang Ajang Lino, Deputy Commissioner for Domestic Tax said on Tuesday. Speaking to reporters in Juba on Tuesda, AJang warned that any company that fails to clear its arrears will have its properties seized.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have blocked their bank accounts and we have asked the banks to transfer the revenue to the account of National Revenue Authority either through the Bank of South Sudan or commercial banks. If the taxpayer is lacking money in those accounts the next thing is to seize their properties and put them on public auction,\u201d Ajang said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have served notice to about 10 companies maybe to a tune of 10 billion South Sudanese pounds and these are from different sectors, some of them are construction, some of them are general trading companies and airlines, and the rest of the detail rest with the national revenue authority for confidentiality purpose,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

He said the foreign companies have been avoiding paying their taxes and shifting profits to their home countries. \u201cOver time a number of taxpayers have not been complying with taxpaying and this has resulted in accumulation of arrears, majority of people come to South Sudan to do business and they take away the profit that could have come to the government,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSouth Sudan taxation system is on the principle of self-assessment, the taxpayers declare what they intended to pay within a year, previously, the government has not been closely following up to ensure the taxes are collected but the trends have changed and the tax authority is actually on the forefront to ensure that they implement the tax law in letter and spirit,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
