Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>The European Union (EU) has called on the Government of South Sudan to uphold the human rights of every citizen in the country.<\/p>\n

EU Ambassador to South Sudan Timo Olkkonen made the remarks during a fireside chat on Human Rights and Democracy at the University of Juba to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.<\/p>\n

He said there was a need for the Government of South Sudan to uphold the rights of every citizen in the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe rule of law is something that we require boosting in South Sudan because many of these violations go without consequence, they go without punishment. Impunity prevails even in some of those horrific transgressions,\u201d Amb. Olkkonen said. \u201cAll of us should act towards each other in the spirit of brotherhood. We are talking in South Sudan about a trust deficit. We have continuing conflict in the country and the whole stages of the peace agreement implementation is not a finished business as we all know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a need for more to be done,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The EU envoy said they will continue to support the Government of South Sudan during its political transition.<\/p>\n

The World commemorated the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on 10 December 2023 with amplified calls to end impunity across the globe.<\/p>\n
