Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>The Federal Republic of Somalia officially joined the East African Community (EAC) on Friday by signing the Treaty of Accession.<\/p>\n

This historic ceremony, held at State House in Entebbe, Uganda, marks a significant step towards enhanced economic and trade opportunities for Somalia and the entire East African region.<\/p>\n

President Sheikh Hassan Mohamud of Somalia signed the treaty alongside the Chairperson of the Summit of EAC Heads of State, President Salva Kiir Mayardit of South Sudan.<\/p>\n

The ceremony was witnessed by Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and other dignitaries, highlighting the regional significance of this event.<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Kiir stressed the importance of peace and stability in the region to achieve sustainable development,\u201d stated a release from his office, emphasizing the link between regional cooperation and economic prosperity.<\/p>\n

President Mohamud, in his remarks, expressed optimism about the positive impact of joining the EAC.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe integration will bring the country the economic and commercial future of the East African countries to enhance trade in the region,\u201d he declared.<\/p>\n

This accession comes after the EAC Heads of State directed, at their November 2023 meeting, that Somalia deposit the instrument of ratification within six months of signing the treaty.<\/p>\n

This formal step paves the way for Somalia\u2019s full participation in the EAC, alongside its partner states: Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Uganda, and Tanzania.<\/p>\n

Somalia\u2019s membership in the EAC is expected to bring numerous benefits. Increased trade within the bloc will open up new markets for Somali businesses and boost economic growth.<\/p>\n
