Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>South Sudan Minister of Humanitarian Affairs has told a meeting in Geneva that the government is unable to provide basic services to refugees and returnees including treating and resettling them in safe locations due to funding constraints.<\/p>\n

Albino Atak Akol was speaking on Saturday during the Second Global Refugee Forum (GRF) on Sudan Crisis, in Switzerland.<\/p>\n

Mr. Atak said the situation remains dire although humanitarian partners are doing everything they can to help.<\/p>\n

He attributed the situation to a drastic reduction in humanitarian funding and cuts in food ratios to the returnees.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe government of South Sudan with the partners have done what they can, but the situation is still very dire. All the resources that the government of South Sudan enrolled with it partners are overwhelmed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith this movement of these people from Sudan, and as they continue to do this, the situation is still dire. We are unable actually to give the basic service to those who are coming, we are trying but is not sufficient.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are unable to treat even these simple illnesses that is coming, and we are unable to prevent the hunger that they now are facing, we are even unable to find them a settlement that deserves to be given to them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Minister Atak further called on development actors to step forward and act quickly.<\/p>\n

He stressed that it is critical that those who are fleeing the Sudan conflict find ways to restore their lives and dignity by finding safe homes and making sure they find work and their children go to school.<\/p>\n

He called on the humanitarian partners to invest in road infrastructure- particularly between Renk-Malakal-Maban routes so that those fleeing are able to move from border points.<\/p>\n

Close to 450,000 people have moved to South Sudan, of whom 83% are South Sudanese and 15% Sudanese refugees.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe government of South Sudan has welcomed them with open arms as opened its borders to receive everybody that fleeing the conflict.\u201d<\/p>\n
