Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>There have been several concerns from some political parties and the international community about the plan for conducting the general election in December 2024.<\/p>\n

Among the parties to the peace agreement, some also do not want the election to be conducted, citing the pending tasks.<\/p>\n

Last week, the United Nations Security Council also raised concerns about the guarantee that South Sudan will conduct credible elections in 2024, owing to some pending tasks yet to be accomplished. They argued that the government had not put in place serious mechanisms to ensure that the planned election would be transparent.<\/p>\n

However, one thing that should be noted is that even the Comprehensive Peace Agreement was not implemented one hundred per cent.<\/p>\n

Indeed, some key tasks have not been completed but this could not halt the whole process of the election.<\/p>\n

There is a serious need for the country to end the transitional period and focus on service delivery to the citizens.<\/p>\n

Since secession from the Sudan, the country has been operating under a transitional government. The long operation under the transitional government has greatly affected services to the citizens.<\/p>\n

It is generally known that a transitional government is not considered a permanent government because it has a specific lifespan. In a transitional government, the parties involved often focus on power sharing and their interests rather than the citizens.<\/p>\n

So, it is time to end the transition of government through the election, as the citizens will be allowed to elect their own leaders. We need to elect people who will be accountable to the people and their constituents.<\/p>\n

The parties to the peace agreement need to get ready and start mobilising their members for registration.<\/p>\n

The parties need to have one voice in the election preparation because the citizens are willing to go to the ballots to elect their leaders.<\/p>\n

So, political parties need to get serious unless they are doubting their survival after the election.<\/p>\n
