Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>A government official in Jonglei State is urging its citizens to remain vigilant and safeguard their properties as the security situation reportedly deteriorates in various parts of the state during the Christmas and New Year festivities. This appeal follows recent complaints from residents in Bor who expressed concerns about feeling unsafe and called for heightened security measures.<\/p>\n

Elizabeth Nyadak John, the State Information Minister, addressed the unease in parts of the state during an interview with Radio Tamazuj. She acknowledged the heightened concerns and encouraged residents to exercise caution.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe received credible reports that a force of 600 armed youth had mobilized in Gumuruk and was moving towards Duk County. In Akobo, there is also anxiety, and people are relocating to towns,\u201d she disclosed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile each county has government structures to provide protection, the ultimate responsibility lies with individuals. Given the reported planned attack, people should take measures to protect their families and consider staying closer to town,\u201d she emphasized.<\/p>\n

However, Nyadak, also serving as the state government spokesperson, stated that they are collaborating with Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) authorities to repel any potential attack. She emphasized that those planning the attack are a common enemy to both GPAA and the Jonglei State government.<\/p>\n

Duk County Commissioner Peter Latjor Chuol acknowledged the imminent threat of an attack and urged efforts to deter it, emphasizing the importance of avoiding a return to inter-communal violence.<\/p>\n

Abraham Kelang, the GPAA Information Minister, admitted that a group of armed youth had mobilized for an attack. He explained, \u201cA few days ago, a small group of about 50 youths had mobilized themselves for attacks. While we do not know their intended locations, our government intervened. These youths have been demobilized, and we have informed our Jonglei State counterparts about it because we seek peace. Criminals are not allies to any government, and we seek the cooperation of Jonglei State to collectively fend them off.\u201d<\/p>\n
