Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>A South Sudanese activist has denounced the use of social media as a means of fueling violence between Dinka Ngok and Twic while calling on citizens from both sides to advocate for peace.<\/p>\n

In a statement extended to Sudans Post on Tuesday, Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), called on the youth of Twic Mayardit and Ngok Dinka to use social media for peace rather than to spread hate speech that fuels the communal violence.<\/p>\n

\u201cOngoing deadly violence among the communities of Twic Mayardit and Ngok Dinka in taking the serious trend of abuse and amplification of hate speech and hostile propaganda in various social, \u201cEdmund said.<\/p>\n

An award-winning activist said the misuse of social media is disturbing and posing serious threats of further escalation of deadly violence following the killing of Abyei Deputy Chief Administrator on 31 December 2023 in Rumamer County.<\/p>\n

The outspoken human rights defender said social media platform abuse can easily trigger the occurrence of genocide or crimes against humanity and grave Housman rights violations.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are tracking those individuals from both conflicting communities of Twic Mayardit and Ngok Dinka who are effectively engaged in championing hate speech and hostile propaganda in social media platforms for fueling violence more than promoting a culture of dialogue for reaching peace.\u201d<\/p>\n

He called on the diaspora population of the conflicting communities to refrain from fueling further deadly violence among the sisterly communities.<\/p>\n

On 31st December 2023, the late Gen. Deng along with five people including two of his bodyguards were ambushed and killed by suspected armed youth while on the way to Agok to attend the New Year prayers at Jouljok Parish.<\/p>\n

Abyei region, known for its oil wealth, has been marred by recurring violence, largely stemming from Dinka Ngok and Twic.<\/p>\n

The disagreement revolves around the demarcation of the administrative boundary in the region.<\/p>\n
