Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>Works on the Akon International in Warrap State is on schedule and the facility should be ready on schedule, Gogrial West County Commissioner, Victor Wek Koordit has said.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, South Sudan\u2019s Vice President for Services Cluster Hussein Abdelbagi Akol, accompanied by a delegation, toured the airport located in Gogrial West County to assess its progress.<\/p>\n

Over the past years, Akon, the home town of President Salva Kiir Mayardit has relied on a local airstrip for any flights to and from the area.<\/p>\n

The three-year contract construction of the Akon International Airport is expected to end next year, according to an official who sought anonymity. Wunkoc Construction Company is undertaking the works.<\/p>\n

The Vice President was accompanied by Presidential Affairs Minister Joseph Bangasi Bakasoro, Roads and Bridges Minister Majook Mijak and a host of senior government officials. Also present was Warrap Governor Kuol Muor.<\/p>\n

“The visit is to see how the construction of the airport is progressing on. The work is going on well, the second layer has been covered and is expected to be completed in 2025,” Commissioner, Victor Wek Koordit said.<\/p>\n

William Wol Mayom, State Minister for Information said, “The purpose of the visit is to make an assessment and indeed the work is going on well. The second phase is finished and the last phase will start soon according to the engineers. The run-way is designed well and the capacity of runway is 200 meters wide and the reserve area is there if there is a need.”<\/p>\n

Adding, “When the construction was launched last year, it was said that the work will take the maximum of two to three years. The nature of the work we have seen yesterday [Wednesday] is fast and the deadline will be met without any delays because the murram on the second layer has been laid.”<\/p>\n
