Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>The government\u2019s main agenda for 2024 is to finish the transitional period through elections, as backed by President Salva Kiir, said Jemma Nunu Kumba, the speaker of the National Assembly.<\/p>\n \u201cOur main agenda this year is to finish the transitional period peacefully with elections as declared by His Excellency the President,\u201d Kumba said as she spoke on the eve of the New Year at the assembly.<\/p>\n She said the citizens will also play a crucial role in deciding the future of the country as far as consolidating peace is concerned.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s up to us South Sudanese to really decide what we want and if we decide and determine to have peace in this country, we will do it because the country is ours and everything is on our hands,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n She added that \u201cpeace should come from our hearts and strong political will to make sure that we implement the peace agreement in spirit and letter, and then we go for elections.\u201d<\/p>\n Kumba emphasised reconciliation as she said that South Sudanese need to be redeemed from conflicts and hatred as they have entered into the New Year<\/p>\n \u201cFor us here, we can adopt redemption as the theme for this year, that we should be redeemed from the bad things that we are going through.<\/p>\n \u201cWe should be redeemed from hatred among ourselves and create a peaceful environment for our country and our people to live in,\u201d Kumba explained.<\/p>\n On the House business plans, Kumba said that the assembly will be very busy in the coming month in finalizing the remaining bills needed before the end of the transitional period.<\/p>\n \u201cWe know our roles; we are going to be very busy this coming month to finalize the bills we have in our hands and move on.\u201d<\/p>\n The first deputy speaker of the National Assembly Oyet Nathaniel urged the judiciary to double their efforts in executing their mandates.<\/p>\n \u201cThe executive does their parts and we in the parliament do our parts. There is one aspect that seems to be missing: the other arm of government, the judiciary. We want them to be visible,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n He added, \u201cThe executive arm and the legislative arms of government are always on the front page of the news, this shows what their activities and functions that they do.
