Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>SPLM officials preached loyalty to \u201cthousands\u201d of supporters gathered in Yei River County for a \u201ccultural gala\u201d on Saturday ahead of President Kiir\u2019s endorsement by members in the region.<\/p>\n

A press statement from the office of Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony said the event amazed \u201ctens of thousands\u201d but the figure could not be independently verified.<\/p>\n

The party supporters converged at Yei Freedom Square in a cultural event organized by the state secretariat to \u201cwoo masses\u201d ahead of the planned Equatoria Endorsement rally.<\/p>\n

Clement Gai Kulang, the state SPLM Deputy Chairperson reportedly urged members to embrace peace and \u201crally behind the candidature of H.E Cde. Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit as the sole presidential flag-bearer for the 2024 General Elections.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCde. Gai also emphasized on the need for the members shun violence and tribalism which is counterproductive to the development of the area,\u201d the statement reads in part.<\/p>\n

Yei River Commissioner Aggrey Cyrus reportedly called on his party comrades and supporters to embrace elections while stating that 2024 is a great year for positive change.<\/p>\n

SPLM has embarked on countrywide campaigns and trainings to establish its readiness for the upcoming elections, already greeted with some pessimism.<\/p>\n

The peace parties have previously voiced different views on the planned general elections.<\/p>\n

While the SPLM In Government insists the polls will be held as scheduled in the peace road map, the SPLM -In Opposition has expressed reservations over the process citing pending pre-requites.<\/p>\n

Opposition parties have also complained about lack of civic and political space, leading to infringement on their freedom to campaign across the country.<\/p>\n

This has prompted an activist to call on the Presidency to decide on whether elections can be conducted with or without implementation of some of the provisions including census and a permanent constitution.<\/p>\n
