Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>The Chairperson of National Brokers\u2019 Union has been arrested a day after speaking to the media about the fate of dozens of the institution\u2019s members also detained by police, the Union\u2019s lawyer said.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, February 7, Brokers Union Chair Abraham Majok told Eye Radio that 20 of his members, including the secretary general and an advisor are in police detention over unknown reasons.<\/p>\n

National Police Spokesperson confirmed the arrest in an interview with Eye Radio, saying it was over tax-related issues.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Chut Aleer Deng, a lawyer to the Brokers Union said chairman Majok has again been thrown in as well after speaking to the media.<\/p>\n

Lawyer Aleer said the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at Juba\u2019s Police Northern Division opened a case against the brokers union leaders and some Sudanese traders.<\/p>\n

The police, according to Aleer, accused members of the union of failure to produce documents, give notice or information to public servants, wearing public servants\u2019 uniforms and using illegal tokens.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe chairperson of the brokers union is one of the people who were arrested as well, and so far, the investigation is still ongoing, so we have no more information on the reasons why,\u201d the lawyer said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut the charges which are being pressed against them, are sections 111, 112 and 107 and 48 of the South Sudan Penal Code. These are the charges on which they are now being investigated. We were informed that the complainant is the CID department.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brokers are individuals or firms who act as intermediaries between investors and clients.<\/p>\n

They act as agents for customers and charge the customer a commission for his\/her services.<\/p>\n
