Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>South Sudan\u2019s Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs received the Pension Fund Act, 2012 (Amendment) Bill 2024 on Thursday from the National Constitutional Amendment Committee (NCAC) after completion of the review process.<\/p>\n

The NCAC, as mandated by the revitalized peace agreement, is responsible for scrutinizing the country\u2019s fundamental laws for potential amendments to facilitate necessary reforms.<\/p>\n

During the ceremony, Gichira Gibara, the chairperson of the NCAC, highlighted that the amendment aims to enhance the reporting mechanism, ensuring the safeguarding of funds to guarantee that employees receive their income upon retirement.<\/p>\n

Gichira Gibara emphasized the significance of the amendment, stating, \u201cWe have been reviewing the act to strengthen the pension administration process in the Republic of South Sudan. Pensions play a crucial role in providing security in old age. After dedicating many years to public service, individuals retire and require financial support. Throughout their working lives, both the employees and the government contribute to their retirement, and this is the essence of the pension fund.\u201d<\/p>\n

He mentioned that the bill has undergone updates to align with regional and international best practices in modern pension fund management.<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, it is important to acknowledge that there have been numerous challenges in the existing law concerning pension administration. There has been a lack of adequate provisions and proper record-keeping, making it difficult for individuals to track their contributions and the government\u2019s contributions towards their retirement. The amendment seeks to address these issues, ensuring that individuals can access their funds promptly upon retirement,\u201d Gichira explained.<\/p>\n

Dr. Gabriel Isaac Awow, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Justice, emphasized that the amended bill aims to safeguard the rights and interests of government employees.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Ministry of Justice and its team have received a crucial bill from the National Constitutional Amendment Committee, especially significant for the people of South Sudan, particularly those who have served or will serve the country and eventually retire. The amendments in the bill cover various categories and aspects of government employees\u2019 pensions. We appreciate the invaluable role played by the National Constitutional Amendment Committee despite the challenges faced,\u201d Dr. Awow emphasized.<\/p>\n
