Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>Mayom County Commissioner Luka Cherey Riek confirmed that 969 internally displaced persons (IDPs) have arrived in Mayom County, Unity State.<\/p>\n

The IDPs fled as a result of the ongoing conflict in the contested Abyei Administrative Area.<\/p>\n

The land conflict is between the Twic Dinka and Ngok Dinka communities and has resulted in widespread displacement.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe received 943 displaced persons from the Abyei Administrative Area. An additional 26 individuals arrived yesterday from the Amiet Payam area,\u201d Commissioner Riek told Sudans Post in an interview in Bentiu.<\/p>\n

Riek has provided land and access to a water borehole for the IDPs in the Kaikang area of Mayom County.<\/p>\n

Humanitarian partners, including the International Organization for Migration (IOM), UNHCR, and the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), have registered the displaced persons.<\/p>\n

The IDPs arrived with limited food supplies and are currently relying on local resources.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe provided some food assistance, but it wasn\u2019t enough. We\u2019re coordinating with the UN in Abyei to transport more IDPs to Kaikang,\u201d Riek explained.<\/p>\n

The commissioner appealed to neighboring states to promote peace and stability for all citizens of the young nation.<\/p>\n

The conflict within the Abyei Administrative Area began in the Amiet Payam region, a disputed territory between the two Dinka communities.<\/p>\n
