Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>The Executive Director of Community Empowerment for Progress Organisation Edmund Yakani called on the national ministry of finance to find the best ways to prevent swindlers from laying their hands on the country\u2019s revenue.<\/p>\n

Yakani told The City Review yesterday that the revenue collection system in the country is so open making the government lose a lot of money through corruption.<\/p>\n

According to him, the government is unable to sustain the 400 percent salary increment because the economic pressure makes those concerned with revenue collections divert the money into their pockets.<\/p>\n

The activist alleged that the more money is diverted to individual pockets, the more civil servant\u2019s salaries may delay as a result.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, the minister of finance has to sit down and find the best way to control all the revenue sectors, such as the ministry of finance, the national revenue authority, the petroleum ministry and Nile Petty. They all need to sit down and agree on how to neutralise revenue from \u201d and non-oil resources to respond to the demand of civil servants,\u201d Yakani explained.<\/p>\n

He also urged the national parliament to exercise its power of impeachment against any official who does not respond to or comply with the parliament\u2019s calls.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, the First Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Oyet Nathaniel, said the finance minister, Dr. Barnaba Bak, is already on the summons list to answer questions on the elusive salary raise yet the country has the resources.<\/p>\n

This was in response to a report in which the minister of finance and planning stated that his ministry was unable to sustain the 400 percent salary increment passed in the 2023\u20132024 fiscal budget.<\/p>\n

South Sudan emerged among the most corrupt countries alongside Somalia as per the Corruption Perception Index published by Transparency International in 2022.<\/p>\n
