Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>At least 870 police officers graduated yesterday after attending an upgrading training in Juba.<\/p>\n

The graduates included police cadets and those who have served for the last five to 10 years.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is something called upgrading, which means there are officers who have served for the last five or 10 years at the rank of warrant officers and they are upgraded because of their performance to become officers,\u201d said the deputy police spokesperson, Brig Gen. James Dak, as he explained the programme.<\/p>\n

Indeed, upgrading training is very important for organised forces, especially the police, who mainly deal with civilians in their daily activities.<\/p>\n

It equips them with new skills and knowledge for them to remain relevant in the rapidly growing society that comes with the challenges of dealing with crime.<\/p>\n

Also, other units of the organised forces equally need upgrading training with advanced knowledge and technologies. This is important because we are living in the era of technology, where things are changing day and night with all their associated challenges.<\/p>\n

However, the most important thing is for graduates to ensure that they make good use of the knowledge acquired to create improvement in society.<\/p>\n

There have been cases of human rights violence among some of our servicemen. This is sometimes caused by negligence, a lack of discipline, or not adhering to ethics.<\/p>\n

In most cases, any officer who attends upgrading training is supposed to be more disciplined.<\/p>\n

Being disciplined does not mean one should be obedient to the superior or commander, even if he or she is wrong. It is all about adhering to the laws and the duty of the police.<\/p>\n

They are supposed to protect civilians and their properties but not the interests of the individuals or take sides with any self-interested politicians.<\/p>\n

It is in the interest of the citizens to see more reforms in the police because this is the unit that deals directly with them.<\/p>\n

However, maintaining the welfare of the police would motivate them to adhere to the laws and ethics in letter and spirit.<\/p>\n
