Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>The parties to the 2018 revitalized peace agreement are expected to meet soon over the fate of the conduct of elections, the Minister of Information has said.<\/p>\n

Michael Makuei says the government still maintains its position to hold elections in December.<\/p>\n

He however says the parties shall meet to dialogue over the conduct of elections.<\/p>\n

Minister Michael Makuei was speaking to reporters after the Council of Ministers meeting in Juba on Friday, March 8, 2024.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur position is that we are going for elections as the government of South Sudan in accordance with the provisions of the roadmap,\u201d said Makuei.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf there is anybody who does not want to go for elections, this will be determined in the parties meeting that will be held because the parties will dialogue over on the way forward,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnybody that does not want elections is up to them because if you have decided not to exercise your constitutional right, it is not our duty to ask you as to why are you not exercising.\u201d<\/p>\n

The SPLM IG, the South Sudan Opposition Alliance, and other Political Parties have so far confirmed that they will participate in this year\u2019s general election slated for December.<\/p>\n

But the SPLM IO says they may likely not participate in December\u2019s presidential and parliamentary elections, proposing a 24-month extension.<\/p>\n
