Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>The outgoing Vice Chancellor of the University of Juba said he is confident that the institution will grow under his successor as he bid farewell to a position that he held for the last ten years.<\/p>\n

President Salva Kiir, also the Chancellor of Public Universities, appointed Professor Akec in 2014 and relieved him last week.<\/p>\n

In his place, Kiir appointed Professor Robert Mayom Kuoirot in a major reshuffle that also replaced vice chancellors of the other four public universities.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is my last day to sit at the helm of the administration of the University of Juba. It is a historical moment in the history of our country and the university,\u201d Akech posed on his Facebook page on Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cHere, I am signing my Handover Report which I am going to deliver to the incoming Vice Chancellor, Professor Robert Mayom Kuoirot, to carry the torch forward,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Prof. Akec said he is \u201cdelighted and confident\u201d that the University of Juba will continue to flourish under his successor.<\/p>\n

Akec is known for his opposition to the government initiative to dredge tributaries of the Nile River, later rephrased as \u2018river cleaning\u2019. The project apparently ongoing, is perceived to mitigate devastating seasonal floods in the country.<\/p>\n

He has equally been criticized for adopting policies mandating students to pay heavy fees to fund his ambitious plan to build new lecture halls at the university.<\/p>\n

The farewell post on social media attracted 4,000 likes and 2,000 comments as internet users hailed his achievement at the university and wished him luck on his future endeavors.<\/p>\n

Nhial Terry commented: \u201cWe\u2019re delighted you did a good job, and we wish you the best in your next assignment.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGood luck dear Prof. You\u2019re an inspiration to us and may you find success and prosperity in whatever path you choose after this,\u201d said Ayok Papalima.<\/p>\n

Agum Dani Telar said: \u201cProf John Akech you don\u2019t know how much the Uoj still needs you unfortunately the transition is part of administration. Thank you for showing us the way and telling South Sudan that development starts with the little you have.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you, Prof. John Akec Apuruot, for the innovation, devotion, leadership, and passion you have put into this great institution to get it where it is now,\u201d University of Juba posted on its Facebook page.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou will always be regarded as an icon who inspired us and achieved great things. Best wishes in your next endeavors.\u201d<\/p>\n
