Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>The African People\u2019s Congress (APC), a youth-led political organization, is protesting the $50,000 registration fee set by South Sudan\u2019s Political Party Council (PPC).<\/p>\n

In a statement, the APC condemned the fee as \u201ca blatant attack on democracy and a clear attempt to silence opposition voices.\u201d<\/p>\n

They argue it creates an unfair barrier to entry for smaller parties and marginalized groups, undermining political participation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe exorbitant fee of $50,000 for obtaining a political party registration license in South Sudan is a blatant attack on democracy and a clear attempt to silence opposition voices,\u201d the statement reads.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a blatant display of greed and corruption by those in power, who seek to maintain their grip on power at the expense of the democratic rights of the people,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n

The APC demands an end to the fee, calling for fair and transparent registration processes that do not discriminate based on financial resources.<\/p>\n

\u201cDemocracy cannot thrive in an environment where political participation is reserved for the wealthy few. It is time for the government of South Sudan to uphold the principles of democracy and ensure equal access to political participation for all citizens,\u201d the statement continues.<\/p>\n

The APC further criticizes the fee as incompatible with the economic reality of South Sudan.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis goes against the principles of natural justice, fairness, and good conscience. The PPC needs to understand that most South Sudanese are currently impoverished and cannot afford the high fees for a provisional license,\u201d the group said.<\/p>\n

The APC and its allies announced their intention to challenge the Political Party Council in court.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are not registering commercial banks, insurance companies, or seeking Akol\u2019s daughter\u2019s hand in marriage,\u201d the statement declares.<\/p>\n
