Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>The governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, Tong Aken Ngor has warned traders against hiking prices of goods in the wake of depreciation of the local currency (SSP) the dollar. He was on Monday meeting traders in the state capital, Aweil.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to tell you that the government is working hard to reduce the prices as the Ministry of Trade, the Central Bank and Ministry of Finance are injecting the dollars into the markets and as such as the dollar is getting down as low as 150 per 1 dollar,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Ngor said those violating government\u2019s directive would be arrested. \u201cWhere do you get your own exchange rate and the government is working around to fix the issue of skyrocketing prices which is what is on people\u2019s minds. We will arrest those who don\u2019t comply and keep selling their foodstuffs at their own volition,\u201d he warned.<\/p>\n

Although he acknowledged the scarcity of dollars, the governor urged traders to cross-check with the Ministry of Trade and Central Bank before determining prices of good they often sell to clients.<\/p>\n

A 50kg sack of maize flour, earlier sold at SSP 50-60, now costs SSP130. Meanwhile, the state Chamber of Commerce chairperson, John Gau welcomed the move taken by the government to reduce the rate of the US dollar to between 150-170 SSP per 100$.<\/p>\n

Gau, however, said they would collaboratively work with the state government to ensure that prices are regulated in order to salvage the devastating economic pitfalls that citizens are currency facing.<\/p>\n
