Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>The National Elections Commission (NEC) of South Sudan has announced the first phase of voter registration ahead of elections due in December this year.<\/p>\n

Speaking at a news conference held in Juba on Tuesday, the NEC chairperson, Abednego Akok Kacuol said the process will commence with voter registration.<\/p>\n

He said the commission already received money from the national government to kick start the process that will involve developing a draft election calendar.<\/p>\n

Akok said voter registration will start in June if stakeholders approve the calendar.<\/p>\n

\u201cAn action has been taken by the national government. They deposited to us some money and it was given because the budget we presented to them is organized in a sequence. The first sequence is pre-elections activities. These pre-election activities start with accommodation of election headquarters in Juba and then we go to the 10 states and three administrative areas,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

According to the NEC chairperson, some structures established in 2015 have been deserted by some officials, others have died, while some officials are still in office.<\/p>\n

NEC, he said, will also purchase vehicles to facilitate mobility of election officials.<\/p>\n

Akok confirmed that voter registration will begin in June as per the electoral law.<\/p>\n

The chairperson of the electoral body said a budget for the activities of the commission has been submitted to the parliament by the council of ministers and the national assembly is expected to approve it.<\/p>\n

Once approved, funds for the activities will be released in sequences, he stressed.<\/p>\n
