Africa-Press – South-Sudan. <\/strong><\/span>A civil society activist in Lakes State has welcomed the release on Tuesday of a lawmaker who was unlawfully arrested and detained by authorities.<\/p>\n

It remains unclear why Yirol West Country MP, Ater Jeremiah Telar was detained.<\/p>\n

But Daniel Laat Kon, the state coordinator for Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) said the brief detention of the lawmaker violated his fundamental rights and freedoms within the legal frameworks of South Sudan.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur government should know that the Transitional Constitution of the Republic of South Sudan, 2011 as amended, guarantees fundamental rights to liberty to all citizens. Article 12 protects the right to liberty and security of a person, ensuring that individuals are not unlawfully detained,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Sources say the MP was arrested for involvement in Ikangrona residential area land.<\/p>\n

Laat, however, said discussions around Ikangrong residential area land should have be resolved through dialogue between government and the community.<\/p>\n

He said all procedures of expropriation of land for public interests be followed.<\/p>\n

According to the activist, it is imperative that authorities adhere to legal procedures and respect the fundamental rights enshrined in the constitution.<\/p>\n

\u201cAny deviation from these principles undermines the rule of law and erodes public trust in the security and current stability observes in Lakes state,\u201d said Laat.<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cWe urge the state government to also condemn statements issued by the press secretary [to the governor] that referred to an elected state member of parliament as \u201cprimitive\u201d. Why was he elected if he was primitive?\u201d<\/p>\n

Laat urged the state government not to condone irresponsible civil servants.<\/p>\n
